Al (dobco)
West - stock manager, bball, oneball manager
Hello all, gotta say I now live in England, but I miss the ratrace of the midway! My first experience out of the nest was with Dobco on the rising waters, and I loved it! Anyone who worked the circut had a load of energy, cause the work never stopped but what a great time! You may remember me from the tear down party in Regina, when I was lucky enough to win a pie and I slammed in Debbie Dobsons face! OH how I enjoyed that. Anyway I am now married and work in the radio industry in England, so if you want to email me and say hi, go for it.
Al Hrynk
West - Game operator
I worked on Conklin Shows starting in June of 1977, for Frank and Dorothy Eastman. I worked the Colorama Game, and also a water race game. After working for the Eastmans, I worked for Steve and Debbie Dobson. I worked many different games for the Dobson's as well as built new ones. Does anyone remember the Ball in the Box game using a superball. I worked the West, East, CNE, and the south. I was there when Conklin bought Deggler Shows, and remember playing some of the worst mud fairgrounds on Deggler's old route. I worked over in San Juan, and also Santo Domingo. I remember when the show was running out of plush, and Conklin flew over an entire plane full of nothing but plush. That was in 1978, and 1979. In 1980, Myself and my partner, Alex Vauclair who also worked for Conklin and the above mentioned people, stopped working the games, built our own Food Trailer, Western Bar-b-Q, and booked it with Conklin. We played the West, the Eastern Roadshow, and the US with with it. In 1983, we broke away from Conklin, and went independent. We moved to Phoenix Az, and booked as independent operators for some of the biggest Fairs in Arizona and California. We dropped the California route in 1999, and today just do the Arizona State Fair, and some small venues in Arizona. We are the Number 1 Food grosser at the Arizona State Fair, and last year marked our 25th year in the Food Industry, and our 23rd year at the Arizona State Fair. Alex lives in our home in Apache Jct Az, and I live in another home we own in Palm Springs California.

Wow.never knew such a dark little corner exsisted in the wide world of the web. But that's what you know after living in the sheltered little village called the fair.Started for some quick cash in Edmonton '98 and did an almost full circuit only to stop when I had my full blooded carny baby. I' ve worked for Mich in the coke cups and pizza for almost 8 years on and off and strayed sometimes to work w/terry and rusty in superdogs. tried games w/dave. Hi to one and all. Drop a line to the little redhead (sometimes blonde or black haired) girl w/ the big rack if you remember me. Lord only knows I would probably need to see you to remember you and if you want ice in your drink ;) cheers ...

Also to Dee ( who I asked to set me up with a certain soomeone and she a-hem...laughed! ) Doc and Collette. That was probably one of the best summers I have ever had, and when my daughter is all grown (now 13 yrs old) I would love to experience it again! East - Rides
I was a thorn in Barry Jamieson's ass.But I worked hard too!
Bill Bowley
CNE - Flyer Coaster
I have photos of family and friends that worked with myself. Let's see there are so many that they're starting to melt together. the one thing that I see in my head, day in and day out is that first train accident, all I have to do is close my eyes and I can see it all happen again. There was Bill Davis and His son Dennis, Carpenters Gill Snow and Tom Sharp and Myself. It was an uneventful day in all. The line up was to the back gate which meant that the wait would be about an hour to ride, everybody was all smiles. We did have some sticky trains. We came to the conclusion that this was caused by graphite build up on the track and continued to apply a solution of Oil Kerosene and graphite to keep the track slick. At about 12:30 it was my turn at the breaks and we were running at a clip of one train every 1 minute intervals. I've already had a couple of sticky trains so, I asked one of the platform worker to apply more of the graphite solution to the track and it seeme! d to be working. 20 min latter a train came roaring into the station and came to a quick stop. let me take a quick moment to explain the braking system . The brakes are set at closed, and when the train comes in the brakeman would open it and close it rapidly to slow it down to a stop. Anyhow this train comes roaring into the station, there is a woman that is slow getting out of her seat and the platform workers were helping her. Now I'm running these trains at one every minute so there's not much time, there is a brake above the station but the brake must be applied manually, well the other train is getting to the point of no return and make the decision to move the train to the loading area so the woman can have more time to exist the train as I open the brake the woman wants out now and is standing, I quickly stop the train, and she jumps out. by this time the train has reached the upper brake. With the woman out of the car, I think that all's well. The train starts mo! ve into the loading area, and gets about half way in. Then to m! y horror , the train stops. I look down at my controls both brakes are open, I spin around to engage the emergency brake as the train rocketed with a deafening sound over the station. "I got it, I got it, thank God" I repeated to myself and I could hear the train slowing to a stop , slowing to a stop, "come on, stop already", I thought. I can still hear it the steel on steel screeching the tat tat tat tat tat slowing to a bump bump bump to an almost painful stop, than tat followed by tat tat and then tat ta tat ta tat, and said," dam it is still coming". I start yelling for the platform crew to push the train. "Harder", I shout. "Gill, Tom Bring the bars, the pry bars". I looked at Gill and could see the blood run from his whitening face, as he raced for the pry bars. he was up on the platform in seconds working the pry bar on the brakes and everybody was pushing, pulling ,doing what ever it took. Looking out to the last turn of the Flyer seeing the train going through it hearing the low rumble getting louder . at first the screaming and shouting can be heard over the rumble, but rumble gets louder and louder, closer and closer. I finally shout to all forget it stand back and get out of the way, all clear with a final look at the train I turned my head and closed my eyes waiting for impact. It seemed like all went silent, it was so quiet, nothing not even the noise of the CNE midway.........BANG shook me back to reality, my eyes shot open by the impact, to see the rain of wood chips and flaked paint from the ceiling shower down onto the platform.
Billy Jack Park ( Hippy's Son )
West - Too Many
It all started in the summer of 92 . My mother couldnt contain my angst no longer and figured that my father and the laws of the midway would straighten me out . And it did . I was rough around the edges back then .If you cant remember me by name or face im sure you recognize my legs sticking out from the top of a trash can . I had a real mouth on me . I started out in Calgary Alberta in 92, Hippy worked on the Wild River Raft back then. My first job was for Terry Benze dragging stock for the games. After i got cut loose i had many many jobs , Baloon boy, ladder jockey, ring toss, gopher, paintball dummy for igor, and at long last i settled in on Ed Porcellis Gravitron . I look back on my days with Conklin as serving boot camp to prepare me for the rest of my life.Eva denise varey was buffys daughter and my first girlfriend (candy concession).I always was close to Donny Jail, Dozer and T,Randy from the wildcat, plenty of the ride jo cks and game goons from the early 90s era,the freaks and geeks from Don Wesley's sideshow unit Leonard Waford and Yankees son Paul Miss Linda Brewer my teacher at the academy - But of course i remember too many other people to list in this little box. They always say it takes a village to raise a child and its true for if it werent for these people and more i would not be who i am today.I last saw my father the day he jack knifed Frank's brand new popcorn wagon in Madison Wisconsin in the summer of 95 enroute to Winnipeg from Westchester county.. He was cut loose from conklin that day and my whole world came crumbling around me .The last i heard from Hippy was new years eve of 95 turning 96. I never heard from him since and to my knowledge nobody else has either. If you see him give him a slug in the jaw from me and tell him i say hello. Theres simply too much story to tell and allot to catch up on so if you remember me give me a hollar . You can find me at Gyokusaishugi@sbc global.net (email) or find me Myspace.com under the following URL : http://www.myspace.com/panzerangel or at my music site at http://www.myspace.com/risingsunrevolution contact me under the subject conklin so it gets my attention . i would welcome anyone who finds me and wishes to say hello .. and i do miss all of you .

West - Ride operator WAVE SWINGER
Well to start my Uncle BOB SALO asked if I wanted to work for him & conklin shows in toronto for the summer. I remember him asking me if I wanted full time or part time. I chose full time and boy did I make a mistake, I worked everyday, morning to night. But I learned so much in such a short time, I miss him, he seemed to have disappeared from us all. He had a friend named Trish, I was young but I remember her being so beautiful. She was a Conklin. I just want to thank Conklin and My uncle for a short moment in my life that will never be forgotten. If anyone can help me locate my uncle please let me know, I just want to say Hi and thank him. He's in my thoughts and even though he may not remember but I do because he was a hero in my eyes. My uncle was very proud of his job and took alot of pride in what he did. Canada's Conklin Shows - Office Manage
I was hired at at very young age to run the Cash Office at Maple Leaf Village Park, Niagara Falls. I was to replace Connie - she was following Hughie to the PNE. I had an accounting dipolma from college and extreme knowledge of the carnival business, that I believe was why I was hired at such a young age with all of that responsibility.(as you might say I was born into the business). I enjoyed the challenge, business and the many people I met while I was at Niagara Falls. I remember 3 great events from that employment. Boy! them Dutch guys were hot - they were building the Giant Wheel for Conklin & Garrett Limited. Secondly, the power failure and of course I was across the street eating dinner with my parents - I ran like hell to get back to the park to be sure all of the Cash was secured (what an employee)(I didn't get to finish my meal) Finally the biggest memory and I got harrased alot about this - Mr.Conklin wanted into the Cash Office - I was not su re if it was him or not so I asked for ID - he did not show me any therefore, needless to say he did not get into his office. We also did alot of charity work in the casino section of the company. We did promo with the Buffalo Sabres. It was a GREAT job even though it was long hours, but I had to give it up because I was in my sister's wedding party and the general manager would not give me the weekend off. I still keep in contact with some people I met in those years. I will look up some pictures and attach at a later day.

Carrie Selecky
West - daughter of the fair
My mom Kathy Selecky started working for Conklin shows, The Ex, in Toronto Canada when she was 15. She worked there ever summer and at 20 years old or so, she met my father Dusty. He had been travelling with the show for a few years. She left Toronto with him and the two travelled with the show for a few years until I was born. I was born in Broward County, just after the Dade County Fair. My parents moved to Toronto to raise me, but my mother continued to work for Conklin, in the Ride Time Office for the next 20 years. Conklin Shows is a huge part of my childhood. I spent every summer from set up, through tear down on the lot. The midway was my playgound. I ran around that midway all alone at as young as 6 years old. The ride jocks would come into the office and report my whereabouts. The show is also so important to me, because I grew up not knowing my father and the fair was my only connection to him. I started working for conklin at 10 years old at their first commesary. I sold cigarettes and razors. The money went to found the school which I also worked for, at age 13. I started working on games at 14, and major rides at 16. And when I traveled with the show at 19, I worked food joints, and as a nanny. My mother worked games, rides and food joints. She was also the first woman to work the Mark One. But She spent the bulk of her years with Conklin, working the Ride Time Office with my Aunt Miki. In her last years there, she worked in guest relations. My father was a Ride Jock. I'm told he had a hand in building the platform of the Big Wheel with Buffy, who was then the Foreman. Buffy and Hippie, the long time foreman of The Enterprise, were reportedly his clostest friends. I have so many memories, I could go on and on. My mom has most of the pictures...I just don't want to let Conklin go. I want to be a part of whatever you are doing! Thanks Carrie aka Cricket

West - Office, rides, games, candy, is there anything else?
I first started on the show after visiting a carnival in Hamilton. I have never had so much fun or worked so hard in my life! Something about this lifestyle gets in your blood. I had good times and bad...times I couldn't wait to leave...but I always was ready to hit the road come spring. Living and working at the carnival is like nothing else you can ever experience. We worked hard and partied harder!...some of us too much! Thanks for the memories...I will cherish most of them forever.
Charlene Klasen (Seblefski)
West - Games, Food, Kiddieland
I started in Listowel Ontario, I needed drinking money so I went up to see Sneaky Pete about a job, next thing I know I have given up my apartment and hit the road. I worked for Pete for about a season then jumped over to work for Grant Nicholson in rides. It was partly through that year that I jumped to the "big show" and joined Food Concessions with Jack. I spent one year with Food then went back into the games with Mike Corbett. Spent the rest of my days with Corbett and LOVED every second of my time there. If anyone remembers me and wants to talk old times feel free to contact me. I live in Palmerston with my husband and 3 yr old son and 13 yr old step-daughter. I would love to swap stories of days gone by.

West - Games monkey- One Ball and Wak-A-Mole
I spent two summers on the road, working games for LL Enterprises. We played a couple small towns before hooking up with Conklin in Brandon Manatoba for the big shows. First year I worked and managed a One-Ball, thanks to the recomendation of a friend that I was honest. It was a long and crazy summer, finishing with the PNE and a brief stint in a bank-a-ball joint. The next year I managed to wrangle a slot as a microphone jockey in LL's Wak-A-Mole. I also drove truck for the jumps. Another whirlwind summer, this one not quite so intimidating since I had some idea what I was doing. I'm glad I did it, and I may go out for another summer in the future.

I am so glad Conklin shows came into my life. I met some really great people. I was 13 when I started, and was immediately adopted by a bunch of ride jocks. Al , Gary ,John, Max. You know who you are! who kept me out of trouble over the years. Thanks a bunch!! I had great friendships and heartaches too, but those experiences are what makes me the person I am today. My favorite fair was West Springfield, Mass. they made the best wraps and had the best clam chowder.I just want to say thank you to all who touched my life. West - Ride Foreman Wave Swinger
Started out with the Bernard unit on the drak ride, Then Frank tapped me to go with the West show. I worked on just about EVERY major ride. Met many people. Worked hard and partied even harder. Then I hooked up with southern comfort unit. Now THAT was THE Unit to be in back in the 80's. Joe Bob, Hippie, Tiny, Buffy, Roger, John John and the list goes on. I was the ride foreman On the WaveSwinger and then the Skydiver.Miami, Yonkers, West Pal, Sarasota, man that was awesome. I wish I could name more names but those of you who knew me, you know who you are. Then there were all those that worked the "joints", games and food, arcade, bingo and so on. Had a lot of fun with most of them. Let's NOT forget all the fine young ladies I have had the pleasure to know, some more than others. Many would remember me as Mr Midway for a couple of years. Then I went to work for the Zachinni's. I am know happily married with an 11 yr old girl. She i s my world. I'd love to hear from any and all who knew me. I give thanks to Frank and Jim Caskey for giving me more chances than I deserved. I learned a lot, worked hard and got to see the world while doing it.

Craig Ronnenberg
CSI - Superdogs/ Mitch's Pizza
I originally joined with the show with Mitch's Pizza/Cookhouse and moved to Superdogs the following year where I remained for a number of years before returning to the Pizza. During my time on the show, I made a lot of good friends, gained some family members and overall came out a far better person than when I showed up. Those that knew me knew that I was a bit strange but fun to be around and loved to f@#k with people. I was the one who started the whole "Anderchicken" thing in '96/'97, in case anyone ever wondered where that came from. I left the show in 2004 and now find myself returning for the 2006 season. So big wigs beware; the prankster is back full force, and it's gonna be a hell of a season.
Dana

West - carousel, kiddieland supervisor, ticket supervisor
My husband, Tiny Tim Kelly, was the Giant Wheel Foreman in the mid 80's. I wrote this poem 25 years ago in honor of the biggest ride on the midway! Towers reaching to the sky hold fifty tons of steel The highest on the midway and it's called the Giant Wheel With flashing lights and grinning clowns the wheel's a wondrous sight Alive and spinning through the day; a skeleton by night The Giant Wheel's a huge expanse: 3663 square feet With 24 gondolas holding six to every seat. This beast once had a Foreman by the name of Tiny Tim A rebel, and some green help were quite terrified of him Our massive piece of metal brings back memories, alright The time it took to climb the towers, bulbing every light The colored tubs that rocked and swayed, I painted more than one This ride was slow and lumbering but gave us so much fun! A carnival takes many rides and carnys working long They break their backs to bring you laughter; working for a song It may seem like a fantasy; that none of it is real But nothing moves you quite as much As a spin on the Giant Wheel!

West - carousel, kiddieland supervisor, ticket supervisor
Tiny dragged me off with Conklin in 1983 at the tender age of 18. I had the time of my life and met many wonderful friends (family, really), some of whom I still hang out with today. My first job was "cover the spot". I lasted 3 days before realizing I was not cut out to work in the joints. I ended up on the carousel working for Bruce and took it over when he moved on. I filled in on the zamps and Autobahn at times. In later years I was the kiddieland supervisor and then the ticket supervisor working under Celina Copping and Pat Rice. Yonkers was a freaky place...We left the road around the time we got married in 1989 (our son Kane is 17 and our daughter Savannah is 16 - time flies). I have many, many fond memories. Helping with tear down on the Giant Wheel and climbing up the towers was expecially exciting. I also enjoyed the time I spent working on the Autobahn with Bama Janna for awhile (didn't she have the most beaut iful green eyes?). Tim Wall always made me laugh and riding up from West Palm with him was such a good time (although he would say I ruined his hard hat). I will always remember the time Lurch caught a mark stealing stock from one of the joints and stepped on the guy's head until the cops arrived. That was precious. Our daughter had to do a "truth or lie" prject at school this week and one of her statements was "I am the offspring of carnys". Her class thought it was a lie. I guess not all kids can be lucky enough to have cool carny parents who know the value of good friendships and helping out your brothers and sisters of the road. We would love to hear from all our old friends! Look up Tiny - he's on the list here as well. Take care and ride safe!

I started out as green help and ended up falling in love with the carnival life. I packed up some stuff and hit the road and had the time of my life working the shows, traveling around the country. I had to leave the show for health reasons but I'll always be a carnie at heart. And I always go to the fair when it comes to my town.

Conklin Shows was my breakout into the real world of employment as an adult. I learned that real, hard work is rewarding and that some relationships last for years. Working the "Wheel" was a pleasure! I had a great time travelling the country with Conklin, for the short time that I did.

In the 1970's I was co-owner of G&G Electronics in Oshawa, Ontario and did sound work for Conklin at the CNE and for the Road Show. My initial contact was Sergei Sawchyn and later dealt directly with Jim Conklin. I repaired and fixed sound equipment for the show. I am now retired and live in Darlington, MD. Last night my wife and I went to the local carnival (we're in our late 50's) and I took her on a ride. It reminded me of the good old days working for Conklin. As we grow older we remember good times in our lives and my experience with Conklin Shows was most enjoyable - all the best to you.

Im going to tell you if I chose a different lifestyle it wouldn't be as interesting as my life growing up with all my cherished friends on Conklin Shows through the years.. u know who you are! I could tell you names but there are too many to list. In the beginning, my mothers boyfriend at the time answered an ad for the show in 1988. It turned out to be for a diesel mechanic/truck driver for Chino Zacchini/Teo Zacchini & Sons (we all remember Teo). If it weren't for his family I wouldn't have learned a good portion of my skills of machining, welding etc. Building rides with them at such an early age was cool. I was seeing places that only people dream of at 16. My mother gave me parental supervision, while working for the Zacchinis. I stayed with Chino until 1994. He and his father trained me in various types of machine shop work in Sarasota Fla. regarding manufacturing of dark rides and fun houses. There was a lot of people involved in my life at that time. Steve and Lisa Kaschl (Adam). To Steve, you taught me a lot. Lisa, thanks for being there. You guys made a lot of sense and took the time to teach me the things I know about the business. When we first got involved with Conklin, was in Calgary for the Stampede. This guy was rolling by with a stock cart and asked me if I wanted a job. Working for Bob Negus in the Bingo. My mom worked for the Negus family as well in 1988. And go figure, I would be a carnie for the next 17 years. It's sad though Conklin is gone. My friends have come and gone but the few remain and if I could trade it in for a different life, I would say not a chance. Thanks to Conklin for some awesome memories and in rememberance to the fallen carnies that I was able to be part of their lives growing up on this show. TEO ZACCHINNI, BOB NEGUS, DARIO ZACCHINI. These three definitely had an impact in my life. MISS U GUYS REST IN PEACE WE MISS U. And for everyone that I had the honor to know, I will miss the times we had. CHEERS TO EVERYONE. PERSONALLY I MISS MY HOME. It's sad Conklin Shows is gone, but the legacy of Conklin is in our minds and my heart forever...JUNIOR...

My career started with my "uncle phil" getting me a job at the shop in Brantford for the summer when I was 16. There I assited Bernie and Russel Airdrie doing carpentry work at the shop. On weekends and sometimes during the week they would send us out to do ride rentals maybe for a day or two. An eye opening experience, for someone who never had a real job before then. The following two summers I helped out on the g-wheel, working with Yonkers and Mike Bangle. Getting a true taste for the life, that I would later come to love. After a two year hiatus I started helping out Scoot with e-tickets and building some of the boxes used for that system (maybe that's why they don't work). I continued for three more years after that doing e-tickets and ticket office stuff. Along the way I met my current girlfriend who we now have a beautiful little boy Caeden. Along with Norma I also met too numerous of friends to mention, you all know who you are. I am very thankful to all those who had the patience to work with me and teach me. Most of all the best boss in the world - SCOOTER, who taught me more then he knows. Thanks.

Tearing down the dragon wagon one night by myself I could hear Barry Jamieson yelling at Art and then went onto the next ride. As I carried track on to the platform he walked into the centre of the ground where everything was laid out. He was still yelling as I hopped over the wagon.I grabbed another piece of track, hustling my ass off I loaded it and hopped the buckets again. As I was grabbing another piece Barry says to me "slow down son this isn't a race"Having a bad enough week I kept at the same pace not wanting to "#&$@" him off.I tore the wagon down that night in 36 minutes.I enjoyed working there it was fantastic.

Winnipeg, Mb. I began working for Conklin Shows once at 18 yrs old, in ticket sales. Then at 28, Winnipeg only at RR Ex(Polo Park) the pillows for four years, Kiddieland. My heart set on operating the Merry-go-Round. I believe I am the only woman Metis artist to have done carnival art in the shows. I painted while the show slept. I was part of the first ever group of South Africans that joined the show in 2003. That year I worked for Dobco and enjoyed every minute. All thanks to a special lady from the Brantford office who made that trip possible. Thank you May. You have done more for me than you will ever know. I will be forever grateful. Thank you for trusting me. Who would have thought that the irritating South African that disturbed you at home, would have lasted this long. That year I met Tracey, Dobco Daves better half. Driving across Canada with Tracey, opened a new door for me. In 2004 I returned for another season, but this time working for her in the ticket office. Tracey stopped travelling that year because she was having a baby. A big thank you to her for giving me a chance. Couple of days into South Florida Fair, I met DOC. With DOC, what you see is what you get. I could not have asked for a better boss. He taught me everything there was to learn and allowed me to gain the knowledge and experience needed for my position today, ticket office manager. He will always have my respect, professionally & personally. Thanks DOC.During my time with Conklin, I had the privilege of working with loads of amazing people. There was never a boring moment, everyday different to the next. I would learn something new each day. One person who will always have a special place in my heart, is MISS PAT from the ride office. All the South Africans love her dearly. I remember that I often use to just go and sit with her in her office and talk. She would always have these facinating stories from years back. Miss Pat, always willing to go that extra mile for someone. On behalf of all the South Africans you met over the years, I thank you from the bottom on my heart for making us feel at home. So the 2006 season starts, this being my fourth year with show, new ownership and all. Justin, Allan and myself are the only three South Africans st ill with the show since 2003. I have had a blast and have no regrets. Thank you Conklin Shows for kick starting a life experience that I will always cherish. A huge thank you to everyone that contributed in making my time with Conklin enjoyable.

Conklin Shows International (CSI) - Ride Operator/Maintenance Person
I was a ride operator at Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA on an ominous octopus-like ride called "The Monster." It was a huge hit and our crew spent most of the time mopping up "protein spills" from the riders who ate before boarding. It was a fun experience and I lost weight and got a great "Kennywood Tan" (arms and face only) from working outdoors. Wish those days were back again. Thanks Conklin, for the oppotunity for my first job right out of college.

West - publicity
I was hired with a small group of applied communications students out of Mount Royal College in Calgary to travel with the antique carnival that was unveiled at the Calgary Stampede and moved on to the Ex in Toronto. It was an amazing collection of antique rides that I remembered from when I was a kid. The caterpillar is one that stands out in mind as well as a very old merry go round that I believe was over 100 years old. We arrived in Toronto for a round of publicity and during the ex We walked around the midway putting on small vaudeville type shows for the crowds. It was a great job and I enjoyed the life of a carnie if only for a few months that summer. I learned a lot from the permanent employees that made Conklin Shows their life...It was an honourable profession that they took great pride in. I have a great Conklin watch that has stayed with me over the years....Conklin Shows, Matchless Magnificance.

I remember as a kid the carnival coming to Pembroke Ontario and working in the milkbottle joint for a beautiful lady by the name of [ I beleive ] June who later became Hank Blades wife. That was in 1954 -55 I remember sneaking into the girlie shows for a quick peek . lol Like most fellers on the road we all have a story to tell that we could write a book about it. I ran away from a foster home and joined a circus In ichmond Ontario where I leared to do trapeze and tramboline work. I fell and hurt my back so I could not perform anymore. The man I worked for got in touch with Ron McGee who I met for the first time under the Burlington skyway and got my first job working the good ole fishpond, back then it was known has Bernard shows. Those people took me in like I was one of there own. The show then was owned by Bernie & Sally Arent. I met and married my first wife on that show at Fairbanks park in Toronto divorce her too. I went to work in the winter time driving tow truck for Green;s towing in Toronto and was freeked to find my ex and her boyfriend all stoned on speed had killed my adopted perents Bernie and Sally .I had to dig my ex out from under the dash of the car she was in.Since then I became a truck driver going U.S and Canada I got to visit a lot of the good ole carnies all over North America There are alot of stories to tell but not enough time left. Retired now in Ottawa still the same old Gummer for those who knew me. I spent the summer of 1980 with the Western tour from Winnipeg Red River days, through the Calgary Stampede, Edmonton Klondike Days and then Regina's Buffalo days. After returning to Ontario with the crew I returned to Dunnville and prepared for my last year of high school. On the evening of my 18th birthday and no promise of getting a job I flew, with Wardair to Winnipeg, I caught the show during the setup at Winnipeg Stadium, sleepin under the grandstand for a couple of nights, before getting hired. I had my very first legal beer on the flight form Toronto. Neil Croft was one of my best friends, who travelled with the show from Brantford. His older sister worked as an accountant with the show. After I got hired, I worked under Gordie Banks, who got ime nto one of the bunk trailers. I slept in the front room couch about a week until a bunk opened up.The things I will always remember, are seeing Loverboy at Stampede's midnight madn ess and the 36 hour turnaround between the Stampede close and Edmonton opening. The other thing was being of age in Manitoba and Alberta,. Even though there was a beer strike in AB, we drank anything out of the US, None of which I can remember. I look forward to hearing form anyone who knows where Neil is these days. Thanks forthe memories.Haven

Sometimes a man hits upon a place to which he mysteriously feels that he belongs. Here is the home he sought, and he will settle amid scenes that he has never seen before, among men he has never known, as though they were familiar to him from his birth. Here at last he finds rest. I see nothing in space as promising as the view from a Ferris wheel. Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget. Thanks for the memories.

I first saw Conko on a sweatshirt a co-worker was wearing in 1980 in Eugene, OR. He and his wife told stories about the size of Conklin's midway, the rides we had never even heard of, the great working conditions, how Conklin was the biggest and best ever. Most of us thought it was tall tales and wishful thinking, and since none of us would probably ever see this for ourselves, of little interest. Our show was small, but clean, well run, and well thought of in our area and we were proud of it. A few years later, I met someone else who was returning to Conklin and I took the opportunity to go along. Imagine my surprise the first time I saw the Giant Wheel! This was 1983, and I had never seen anything taller than a Skydiver. We were set up at Atlantis, a water park in Ft. Lauderdale, and as I walked the midway, each ride more amazing than the last, I could hear the stories...all true. Everyone kept telling me,"This is nothing. Wait 'til you see Dade County!" The people I met, and the things I learned stay with me. I think of you all often and smile. Winning awards at the Regina party, stripping the lights off the GW (overcoming my fear of heights with John and Tiny's help!), the friends I still keep in touch with...and the ones that have passed on...all great memories that I treasure. I still miss being on the road.

I worked under Bill Prebble out of Florida. He had a dark ride, the haunted house, and three or four kiddy rides, including kiddy bumper cars. I met my wife working in Canada (she worked consessions). We are still married today (22 yrs). Toronto was the best. I can still remember the hard work and the crazy after hrs fun. That Gorilla Girl was something else too.

I was the only kid I think that didn't want to grow up and have the police man, fireman dream. I had the work for the carnival dream. Met Barry Jamieson and Steve Choate when I was maybe 11 years old, helped them lay out the lot year after year and work as a local, always telling them that someday I'm gonna travel with you guys. Finally later on in the 90's I finished my schooling and went on the road to still be there today, moving rides and also I own a couple games now as well, which covers the gas with the prices in the last couple seasons!

It was a great experience and a real eye-opener, I've enjoyed the friendship with the people of Conklin Shows over the years and the people I've met at the different places that we've played. I am thankful for what this business has taught me and the memories. West - freak show girl then birthday girl!
When my mother's friend's roommate caled me yp and asked if I wanted to do the Canadian tour with her freak show, my first thought was "why not"? SO I walked back into my job at the time and gave them my notice. After a 30 hour bus ride to Winnipeg I was kind of rethinking my choice. But I stuck and stayed. And it payed! Months of mosquito bites, feeling near death sickness, Calgary length days and a few too many sunrises, I made it home to Toronto. That summer was the best of my life. The people that are the blood and guts of that show are the most wonderful people I've ever had the privilage of meeting. And naturally after that summer I couldn't resist going state side. Mr. Dave Potopas was kind enough to get me a visa on a week's notice and off I went. And when I made huge mistakes, Dave and Monica saved me. They will always have a special place in my heart. I can't thank them enough. I also want to thank all the great friends I made during my time out there. There's too many to name so I hope they know who they are. Love you all.

How I started to work for conklin shows was through a friend, I originally worked with butler amusements at the Calgary Stampede, and went on for a few spots after that, but kept going back to join up with Conklin through Big M shows. The experience working with them was nothing but awesome, tiring, but still awesome. The people I met and became friends with out there was something i would never replace in my life! To this day i still talk to acouple of people i met there. The famous football/bingo/arcade parties where a blast.I had nothing but a blast while i workin with them even if it was through another show.

West - Freak Show/occassional crazy pretzel lady
some of you may remember me as'Morgana Hemlock' my first year out as partner on the freak museum, later to be known as 'freakgirl'. I have to say those where the best times of my life, and where I made some forever lasting friendships. I ultimately have to thank Skot for finding me and leading the way to an unforgettable period of my life. Through these pages I have found lost friends Percy and Trent, and hope anyone else lost, will find me here. I was a pretzel lady in West Palm a few times- thank you Mary & John! others I'll never forget- Yankee & Roger, Jackie & Nick, Dave & Monica, Al Rankin (neighbour!), too many names to mention from rides, games and food (you know who you are!), and mostly Tim Wall, who is the most solid person I know! This environment became family- I've never been as close with people out there anywhere else. Unless you live it you never know! I was fortunate enough my last year out to meet the love of my life! My daughter Tahirah also has many memories, and never felt safer or more cared about in the company of 'strangers' thanks for keeping an eye on her!...

After we left the show we (Joe and I) settled down, got married and started our nine to five lifestyle. I wouldn't trade my time on the road for anything but it wasn't always easy. Tough times for not the highest wages but man, what a life lesson that no one ever could have taught me any other way. I especially remember the really bad green help along the way(and I guess the really good ones a little too). I remember being the only white person in certain areas and neighbourhoods and that was a shock from my little town in Alberta! I finally knew what it felt like to be the odd person out. I remember blowing all my money in draws to party and then living off of Coke cup 75cent hotdogs until payday! The football game in Edmonton between the Jointees and The Ride Jocks! Whew! Good times!

As a kid on my own i worked Tom Faltash owner of two rides and enjoyed every minute of the the 5 years i worked fom him . Working as a carny and doing all the travelling and working with the the other carnies was a thrill of a life time. One big crazy happy family. I would do it all again , but the body is not what it use to be. If ya remember me - give me a shout. Brad Faltash was my road boss , as Tom didnt spend much time on the road with us. Anyone who had the pleasure of traveling with the show knows that was the life as a youngster.

Worlds Finest Shows - ride guy
Well, In 1998 I hooked up WIth Sammy Arigo and Big A amusements in Hamilton. Since I had worked for Campbel amusements in the past, and knew about balaning a ride - Sammy assigned me to his Prized -Pink Big Eli High 5 wheel. SInce Sammy put that wheel in all the good Conklin spots - I got the chance to meet up with a few of the clan. But the big start was in port Dover - Barry had sent up the Wackyshak. And With it he sent some people that would turn out to be good friends of mine for years to come. For two years in a row - On the same day In the same spot- In Ottawa on opening day, I was given Employee of the day - Still dunno how or even why. But after my first two weeks there in Ottawa - I was convinced to switch shows the next season. SO determind was I - I even showed up for Skydome during march break that winter. I showed up the first day of the season - ready and excited to learn... Boy was I in for a surprise! They put me in the last place I expected...really. They a lso had a high 5 wheel - Yup... I'm not learnin nuttin...Same old same old. Ha ha. But I learned so much,I didn't know I was learnig. The people - the way of life. I met my future wife Peggy, wile we were in Chatham. Who joined us that season, working a ticket Booth for Bloke. Come Brigden, and the end of the season. We got a place together in the area. We still live with our two sons within a 15 min drive from there...ANd always look forward to the time of year when our friends swing by and see us each and every season. Cheers guys - And I'll see ya @ the watering hole.

I started working for Conklin shows in 2003. Luckily that was the same year the South Africans started working for Conklin. At the end of the West Palm Beach spot I met the greatest man I've ever known. We became best friends right away and two years later the man of my dreams asked me to marry him. It was, if I do say so myself, one of the best weddings I have ever been to. We were married just after the show closed for the night just before halloween. Which also happened to be the night of a lunar eclipse. Everyone was invited, and I'm pretty sure there were people there we have never seen before. (See what happens when you mention free beer and food to carnies!!!!) It wasn't your typical wedding either.(God knows were not typical people) We all dressed in, what else, halloween fashion, it was either the best halloween party or the weirdest wedding ever, either way it was great and I found the love of my life. We have so many memories of all the crazy things that we have done, and all the crazy people we have met.(Some seriously crazy!!He He.) Canada's Conklin Shows, various
I started working at 'the EX'in Winnipeg when I was 16 years old. I went to the Canada employment offices and I was told that I could get a temporaty job at the Ex ...I thought sure that sounds like fun.! I always loved going to the Ex as a kid. Little did I know that I was going to be bitten by the bug! ... I didn't exactly work for Conklin the whole time , but to me it was all one big family. In 1977 I worked for Earl Sullivan selling Fiddlesticks...and met a bunch of crazy Americans....especially my old best bud Mike McDuffy...known to most as McDuffy...quite the wild dude. My friend and I Monika worked in Winnipeg and decided that the next year..we were going on the road... It ended up that I went with my good friends Helen and Peter and Mike...we worked for Fiddlesticks for the summer of 78 after we graduated from highschool. The next year Helen and I'graduated' to work for Steve Oakie(RIP) and Sophie Oakie out of Edmonton selling Creme-o-stix..the Canadian version, lol. Later I worked for Webb Concessions outof kansas, selling Ice Cold Root Beer (don't forget the souvenir cup)..I also worked briefly for the Larsons from Winnipeg. I worked at the PNE in Vancouver for two years for Mike Dobson and ended up travelling with him to the USA. We worked in Springfield Mass and Little Rock Ark... I travelled down to Florida with my old flame Peter Harvey and worked Orlando, Stuart, and Miami.Lots of great memories! The first memory I have was staying in a old apartment complex behind the Elbow Hotel in Calgary. There wasn't enough beds so I slept in the bathtub...it was one of the old style tubs, with claw feet. The water hose was hanging over the side of the tub. While I was sleeping I accidently kicked on the water! There was water pouring down the stairs ..and everywhere.lol..Yep, those were the days.! Sure hope everyone is doing well.If anyone knows whatever happened to ole McDuffy....I would like to know how he is doi ng..like I said we were all like family, and he was like a brother to me. The onlyname I recognized on here was Terry Hunter...from the Stock Truck, hope things are going good with you Terry!!

I can only say if I had to do it again...YOU BET YOUR A#$ I WOULD. Miss everyone and take care

Canada's Conklin Shows - Guest Relations, whack-a-mole, water racers
I worked a few summers with Conklin shows starting off with the stampede and ending up at the CNE. I also went to San Juan and Santo Domingo. Interestingly, I ended up in the US when Deggler bought some of the routes because I was deported from Canada in Calgary. (I believe it had something to do with making fun of a cop when I was working with guest relations) It turned out Collin Forbes (?) hadn't completed my work papers. I clearly remember wearing a conko t-shirt with DEPORTEE on the back of it as I received a police escort onto the plane. Would love to know what Donna Peacock and Joan(I can't remember her last name now) are up to now. I saw Trish about 12 years ago in San Diego but have no idea where everyone is now. I'm now married to a navy captain (a pilot) and living on a 40 acre horse ranch in the black hills of South Dakota with horses, 4 dogs and 2 cats.

Was so long ago. Belleville Ontario was the first fair I had worked at. Reporting age of 16 (i was really only 13) After Belleville, I jumped on a bus and met everyone in Markham near Toronto. I can still hardly believe I made that trip by myself! I remember everyone looking out for me. I couldn't understand it then why other people not much older than me would bother. I appreciated it and it taught me something. I also learned what it was like to work..HARD WORK! :) I don't remember names very well. Pat Hay from Trenton and Jamie ?? Jamie looked out for my friend and I and we felt like his little sister. (no..really)Fun, carefree and crazy risky for a 13/14 year old but somehow it all worked out the way it was meant to. Fun memories. People in my current life would hardly believe that story.

West - ticket booth - truck driver
Me and my fake drivers license ran away from home and wound up in Florida joining the carnival. I was taught how to drive ( a 1977 cab-over Peterbilt) Just what they needed a 16 year old with a fake d/l behind the wheel of a truck. To many questions were being asked so I ran away from the carnival and went home. I have spent the last 25 years diving the same old Peterbilt I bought in 86 and have been with the same concert hauling co. since. Every now and then when I see a carnival going down the road, I cant help but smile and remember if not for Conklin I would not be where I am or have what I have today. I still think the clown is creepy though.

I first started partime in london on in 2000 worked in a grab at the western fair had fun made some money .Mitch ask if i was interested in travelling with the fair for the next year.I was giving his busness card and thought i will never do that leave my new family and work with the fair.spring of 2002 not working call Mitch for a job for the summer' yes he still rememberd me so that is when it I started may 02 in brandon mb warehouse work. This was my first time out west working every day was hard work but when i got my first cheque it was all worth it.Then the stampede was on i'm sorry but i don't remember much it was all a blur of hell.then Edmonton what a difference it's so easy compaired to Calgary . Regina "corndog capatil of the world i beleive" .Then i had enough i bought a plane ticket came home and said never again.until spring of 2003 started in Brandon i was in charge of two grabs istarted to make some friends that mad e it easier to enjoy .every fair seemed the same just a different city it was getting boring i'm going to skip to Saskatoon i made it two toontown where the people have never seen a local fair before and a new crown for "corndog capatil of the world" it never stopped from open to close.then we had the fun drive two Toronto and that is where i packed that year in.So june 04 i started in Brandon in charge of all six grabs i was so busy i didn't have anytime to enjoy myself until july31 my 30th birthday in Edmonton go oilers go we drank outside the trailer till the sun came up carnie alarm clock time to go to bed .Regina Toontown corndog heaven.then the long drive two Toronto driving through Thunderbay new road no lights on the side of the road no lines on the road real fun at 3am arrived in Toronto and that was it never again. 05 06 no fairs for me .Then came may07 I called Mitch ask him for a job again he said things will be different this year you will only need to work in one grab.I started in Brandon at warehouse yes it snowed one morning .Iwas having lots of fun seeing out fair friends making new friends the job seemed easier.when we where closing Brandon a large rain and wind storm little did we know that this was just the start of storms to come.Winnipeg was the first big fair of the year but before it started I hurt my knee really bad so i just struggled through the fair until the last weekend and then when the storm visited the fair it didn't seem to matterd anymore.Calgary a day off to goto Banff that was very nice.the stampede was so busy so hot millions of people but i still had fun.Edmonton still hot .Regina corndogs.Toontown corndogs.Toronto still working "in kiddyland" what did i do wrong.oh sorry done by 10pm thankyou. my family came down for a couple days it was great.then i had 1 month off and we drove to South Carolina two weeks in sunny weather. That was an adventure with all the wonderful people.I will remember all the g reat times we had over the years i just thought i was going to write a couple lines down the job was wonderful the friends and work experience you will never get anywhere else.I would like to say hi to everyone who worked on the fair grounds.Mitchell Concessions Mitch,Bob,Dave,Ted,Linda.Little donuts Keith, jessa.Icecream Jay,morgan.Jayss shaved ice Jay .and all the faces i can't remember.

I started out working on the independent with Webb. When I was 18 I worked with Jones' I Got It for three years in Canada and then with Beth Gray in the Mini Donut/Curly Fries in the southern part of the tour. I managed the Curly Fries for one year and then I started working for Terry Gibbs and Rusty Groscurth in the Super Dog. I have been with them for 10 years and counting. We don't travel with the show anymore :( I met so many people and made some great friends. I wouldn't trade it for the world...

For a small town southern girl from Georgia, this experience was unlike anything I could have ever imagined. It was one of the most enjoyable and defining periods of my life. I was 17 (almost 18) when I went out on the road. My dad worked for Bob in Florida and they recruited me with my parents consent. I don't think they would have backed me going if they knew of the wild times I had. I am thankful for the opportunity to have done this and I have made some really wonderful Canadian friends-who I am still close to even though there is a great distance between us. It was a blast working on this show! What a great way for a young person to experience life and make really great money doing it!

I worked for Conklin shows from 1999-2002? when they came to The Westchester County Fair in Yonkers, NY. I worked in the ticket off counting money and doing rents. I had a great time and met a lot of great people but unfortunately, didn't keep in touch with anyone. I remember Yankee and worked for DOC for about 2 years I think. Even when I messed up trying to balance out and messed something up, no one tried to kill me :) If anyone remembers me, feel free to catch up. We miss having the fair at the Yonkers Raceway! I know most people hated working that show but now there's just a casino there and nothing to do in May! Hope all is well and thanks for a fun few years!

Had the pleasure of working with many great people from my first boss Michelle Ulinder in Guest Relations then moved on to E-tickets where i had 2 awesome boss's in John Gallant and Scooter. Met so many kewl people that worked the Rides and Games. Then it was sold and there was just to much politics involved and the fun was taken out of it, So i walked away from a good chance of taken on E-tickets. If it becomes Conklin again i'd be back in a heartbeat. Good Luck to all my friends that still travel. May the days be sunny and the nites clear. "STRAIGHT OUTTA CONKLIN"

I started out working on the games for Dave and then moved to kiddy rides for John and a bit for Donny. I had alot of wild experiences(thanks to Shawn Berube). I made alot of friends, some I still keep in touch with, and I learned alot. I remember workin hard, livin in the "possum belly inn" with Az and Matt, getting escorted off the grounds in T.O. (I became famous for that one),riding from town to town in the truck with John and the others, and having a blast over all. It really was a life changing experience-one I will never forget. Every year I still get the "itch" to go, you carnies know what I'm talking about, admit it! But I have a whole new life now, thanks to a beautiful 6 year old daughter, she is my whole world now, and I wouldn't trade her for anything. Still, I will always look on my show days as one of the best jobs I've ever had and some of the best times of my life.

I started at the show in 1993 and ended in 2005. I enjoyed many years of fun with not only the people I worked with but with the people I met during those years. I love the fact that everyone that I worked with accepted me as a part of the family including the owner himself. I learned so many new things that no amount of space would do it justice. Most of my experiences was through the show and I am grateful for the fun I was able to achieve through it.

I worked pretty much any game Mike Dobson or Gary could come up with. From dropping monkeys, frog songs and skattering balls. Being on the road was definitely the most life altering experience I will ever have. Made some great friends, made a baby and got a hubby. What else can I say. Now that I have a quiet little air conditionned office, I think back and wonder how I managed those long hours, too hot to breathe days, a tornado in Winnipeg, Thunder Bay during hurricane season. And lets not forget snow in July for the stampede. I miss the people most of all.

Canada's Conklin Shows-various positions
I started as the ticket office computer operator on the WRS (Western Road Show) in 1987. I also travelled in 1988 on the WRS. In 1989, I was the assistant office manager on the Northern lights unit. We were also known as the 'lost' unit for a time. I took over the office on the Northern Lights unit from 1990-1991. In 1992 I worked for Larry Shay in the games. This was the smallest show I have ever worked on, it was a lot of fun. From 1993 - 1998 I was the office manager on the Trillium unit for World's Finest Shows. It was a lot of hard work but the people were good. Some of the best were Steve Choate, Barry Jamieson, Bill Napper, and when mentioning World's Finest Shows who can forget - Art Kitely.(Always good for a laugh - really good guy) & Johnny "The Greek". I also did some ride work with the show at the spring flings at skydome. I also helped lay out the lots.I took a little break from Conklin after this, however I was back in action in 2001 to 2004 with CSI as the e-ticket office manager. We put together one hell of a traveling computer network & made it work (Usually). This was a lot of fun & very challenging at times!!There were one hell of a pile of good people on that show - you know who you are!!All in all I had a great education in the school of life & would not trade it for anything!!

I jumped in, in yonkers new york for dobco in 1986. i think in the star darts. i sat across from a 14' basket joint and i knew thats where i belonged. when we got to winnipeg i used to spend my breaks watching Paul Lefernier and Big Dave, lee and all the long hairs pick the live ones out of the crowds.i wasnt a good fit with dobco so I think Dit took me to Joe Statten and Barry Sproule and told them to give me a shot. The rest is history. i worked for ten toes in the baskets and grabbed a lot of $$$. during the off season played dust bowls in texas and swamps in louisana with statten. had to hustle pool to make the nut sometimes. lots of ups and downs mostly ups. a lot of fun times and crazy stories. I stayed in mobile al. for a while bartending and hustling pool in the twilight lounge. came out of it all with skills and expirience you cant get going to university. i'm living a clean life in NYC (of course) married to a beautiful, sharp, successful woman for almost 2 years. we have a nice condo in nyc and im a buyer at a successful retail store in nyc for 15 years. i would love to keep in touch and reminisce about old times.

I've known Beth Gray and her family since the 1970s, When she met her husband Rick and married, I was very happy for them. Beth's family had been in the show business for many years and generation. Her husband convinced her to continue the love affair and they have been with Conklin probably since about 1990 or so. I work for them when I need extra money and they are glad to have an extra hand. I think of them as family and admire them greatly. Her mother Bea was always like a mother to me too.

Rob Penner
West - Ride operator
I first started working for a gentleman named Lance from the Northern Lights unit. That was in Winnipeg in 1990. I ran the paratrooper in Winnipeg and Calgary. After Calgary the paratrooper went no further. During this time I had met some of the guys from the Western Roadshow and expressed my desire to continue on. So in turn I was taken aboard and went on to work on the Rotor under Al Rankin. It was a great time and enjoyed the atmosphere of it all. I continued on for 1991 and 1992. During that time my main ride was the Rotor but I also dabbled on a few other rides along the way. I will always remember what John John had told me and I quote "LEARN WITH YOUR EYES!" That was the best thing I was ever told cause it really did help to learn the setup and operation of multiple rides. During the fall of 1992 my first son was born and some of you may have seen him in the uniform office as a little tyke. This was the end of my traveling and I came out for Winnipeg in 93,94 and 95. Met a great bunch of people during my time spent with conklin. I even witnessed some scary moments with some accidents but all turned out. I would just like to thank Conklin for the opportunity I was given to take in this lifestyle and work. If anyone out there remembers me give me a hollar at howl_67@hotmail.com ..Hope to hear from some great people.

I was just a kid 14-15, i fell in love with the carny and one day a fellow named Dallas King called down to me from the top of the stairs of the motordrome "hay would you like a job ?Dallas king run the "KING SHOWS" and hooked up with the Conklin Shows"for major shows, like the CNE and others. The next day I was riding on the back of the motorcycle going around the wall, behind a guy called "Crazy Dave" and out front on the bally being tied to a cross, We spent the nights in the arcade that had closed after hrs.and turned into what can only be called a speak-easy, with the girls dancing the booze being actioned off and a 456 crap game going on, what can I say? is this telling stories out of school? well maybe, but it's what was going on and I loved every day and night of it. when the show went down to London Ont.we ended up doing an interview with a TV show Tabloid, when my mother saw the show it was the first clue she had about what I was really doing, not making 'candy floss' as she thought..good times, I'm sure if someone where to hunt through CBC's archives they would find that footage..I personally don't need to see it I remember it all like it was yesterday, 50 or is it 51 years ago. thanks for the memories...

What is there to say? It was THE hardest work I've ever done, but I have VERY fond memories of my time on the road. I mostly did the last few shows of the season, from Springfield, MA on. Never made it through a whole season, though. In '99, I was in Edmonton and I got REAL sick, so I had to take a bus... home... to Massachusetts! You haven't lived until you've taken a bus from Western Canada to the East Coast of the U.S. with walking pneumonia!! LOL. But, I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. I have memories of every town I played in, of the people I met who were almost like an extended family. I had laughs, shared tears, loved and lost... it changed my life the first time I went out, at age 18, fresh out of high school and a sheltered home life. I did a -LOT- of stupid things... pissed Dave Potopas off but GOOD in Winnipeg. But, I can honestly say I have no regrets. All knowledge is worth having, and all ex periences can be learned from. I wouldn't change those years for anything... Thanks for reading... and if you remember me at all, please feel free to email me, I'd REALLY love to hear from you!

Had a ball working for conklin shows western road unit, southern comfort unit. Learned alot from being out there so many years. Those experiences are a life time of memories and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Married Peter Dundas (chicken man- superloops) and have two wonderful children, with him. Black Monday at the cne was the most interesting, especially working down there all those years, and when it first all started in the 1980's. Thanks conklin for teaching us young, know it all kids how to grow up. It is a life lesson in itself, and a ball doing it at the same time. Had made alot of friends out there on the road, and still are my friends to this day...

One of the most memorable summers I can think of.I was cycling across Canada and needed some funds so I stopped at the show in Winnipeg, to inquire about working a few days; well it turned out to be a 3 city tour and I found it to be a blast if you don't mind the hard work involved.I met lots of great people and got to see all the sights and sounds, like I said it was awesome and I'm still not done yet as I plan on hopefully doing the Canadian tour in 2005. See ya soon.

My years on the road were some of the best. I met some great people, worked for some great people (you know who you are). Did everything from taking tickets on the Double Loop at the Florida State Fair to flipping mini donuts in Springfield and Columbia. I learned how to make candy floss (thanks Corinna) and candy apples. I still keep in touch with many friends here in Winnipeg and elsewhere (Bobby, Cynthia, Kate, Doug & Corrina, Yankee & Roger, Slice, Shawna, Tammy from GR, Tim & Cory Chief, Sandy, Mel Robson when I get to see her and others I can't think of right now. I would love to hear from anyone and I would especially like to know if anyone has seen or heard from Lillian Newton.

West - Carnie - Birthday game and other midway games
I worked mostly midway games and helped with set-up and tear down of the concessions. It was around 1969/70 until 1973/74. I was a teenager and it was one of the greatest things I ever did. My daughter who is now grown always teases me and tells her friends that I was a 'carnie" when I was younger. Don't have any pics to send you but I have lots of stories.

Well were to start.....I was 13 and needed a summer job. My sister Cheryl had been travelling with Conklin for a few years before she got my first job working for Calvin in the fruit shakes stand. I am sure their is a few people remember those shorts we wore...... I was with them untill i was 15(2 summers). I remember i left because Calvin moved us girls from his motor home in to a truck he renovated...i didnt wait to see what it looked like, i just was not going to live in a truck! I went to work for Mitch as the original coke cup girl...I stayed there until i was 19...what a blast let me tell ya...PARTY!!! Florida soon became home! I now know if i hadn't worked for Mitch i would have never new what HARD work was... Bottom line it was hard at times, but the good times over road the bad ones...Thanks Mitch for every thing!!! My mouth got the best of me, so i soon left the Mitchel Family and moved on to Super dogs....My sister was in Florida working for Frank and Jodie. Things didnt work out the way Cheryl was promised they would, so together we went to work for Terry and Rusty. What a wonderful experience, what a family to work for, the very best ever.....Those guys walked me through some tough lessons in life, i know they didnt always agree in fact i know they didnt, but they always stood behind me. I do love them and will always hold them close, thank you for all of it and every thing.....I have met some amazing people out there, i believe my experience travelling has made me who i am!!! To all that remembers me, it was a honor to met you and a blast to party with you..... Funny how things change eh? I have always believed life is what you make it, so make it good and have very little regrets. I can still close my eyes time to time and hear the laughter and music coming from the rides and smell those home made corn dogs.......

West - Guest Relations in Canada/ USA and Ice Cream Scooper in Dade
I started off working for Conklin Shows by applying for a ticket seller job in Toronto, I was 18.. I was offered a position in the Guest Relations Booth with John Gallant and fell in love with the carnival from there... learned how to live life.... how to love... and what it felt like to be part of a "family". I guess I had to grow up at one point and went on to University eventually, and I am now a Registered Nurse. I keep the lessons learned during my time with Conkin Shows more dear than any lesson learned in a class. I kept a scrap book of my last year on the road with pictures of lots of people and places... and I get to re-live it all when ever my kids bring out and ask me about it. :) Greeeeeeat time!

A bunch of us from the major's walked it one night as a good bye to a dying ride. Those of you that read this will remember, you know who you are. Missed most of all by me is Miss Pat Rice. The most amazing lady I have ever met! Would like to get in touch with old friends again, it's been too long. Miss you all!

West - southern comfort unit
hey, y'all- it all began in seaside heights new jersey on funtown pier where i met my x husband michael jack park aka hippie who was working for danny hall at the time running the brakes on a jet model coaster- at the end of summer we hit the road and hooked up with Dixie (RIP) and did a couple few spots in ontario and then a couple few in the states- we parted ways with Dixie in the carolinas somewhere and hit the road again hitch-hiking south to jacksonville then west on i-10 to phoenix to join conklin shows where hippie got hired to run his one and only true love, doh!, the enterprise- i worked in the haunted house with bobby (RIP) and we all stayed in this great hotel with a pool and partied our asses off which is something we all were in the habit of doing on that unit(aside from working ...) i think it would be fair to say that frank spoilt us rotten in a lot of ways- we were a pretty tight unit, all personality conflicts as ide- hippie and i got married (why?!*#@) on the midway on the big wheel in little rock arkansas and everyone threw pot seeds instead of rice- but perhaps most of y'all would remember the wet t-shirt contest a whole lot better? how it came down to jamie and kim until kim took off her shirt? remember neil's skateboard getting run over by the fire truck? how it poured in san antonio and flooded the streets? the southern comfort unit was a group of such awsome people: ed dillon (RIP), brian james (RIP) and jamie, michael saint, igor, lurch, bobby, jon, celina, pete, russell, kid, ellen, carmie, chuck, neil, linda, ronnie, chuck g the office dude, that guy from hazlet nj, sam from the motordrome and the other riders, dano and his brother, dirt, burt, dewayne, bonnie, charlie and wade walker!, darnell, sherry, crazy vicky, john the shop guy and his woman from corpus cristi, the danny guy and his french girlfriend, frenchy john, and so many more- we winter quartered in west palm beach and in fort lauderdale were i worked along side michael saint and burnt my bum by accidently sitting in laquer thinner ... we traveled all over the US, Canada and Puerto Rico pretty much getting paid to have the time of our lives- thank-you, frank- and if anyone bumps into hippie from time to time, you can tell him that he is a grandfather-

Tiny worked for John Copping from 82-84 on the wheel before John moved on to bigger things! He asked me to say hello to all of his old carny family from '82 to '89 (he's not a computer guy). He has many fond memories of the old Conklin Shows; at least those he can remember after those Monday/payday all nighters. We still hang out with several of you (from floss bags to ride jocks and, yes, he'll even admit to the odd joinee - ha ha). We hope all you carnys are doing well and life would never have been the same had we not met so many great people. We will never forget ya'll and still speak of you often! The cockroach infested bunkhouses we do not miss a bit..... but winter quarters in Florida was a blast just the same (even though the roaches were bigger and meaner).A special hello to John and Celina, Hippy, Joe Bob, Sharon, Joan, Randy MacCarthy, Tim Wall (do you still love Stevie?), Tommy Coffing, Lurch, Dodey, John John, Danny H ill, Doug, Val, Mark and Chris, Buffy, Don Jail (FN100 now, eh buddy?), Daneta (RIP Murray, our dear friend), Herbie Perkins, John Gallant, John Anderson, 'Bama Janna, Jack Spratt, and others who I have certainly missed here (and missed, period).Take care all!Dana (AKA "Tiny's Ol' Lady)

Puerto Rico - Independent Ride
I worked for my Uncle, Mike Neighbors, running the Bavarian Slide that sat along the back wall of Roberto Clemente Stadium in Puerto Rico in 1979. Working in PR was quite an experience, certainly one I will never forget. The people on the show were all great and hard working individuals. After PR, we went on to Venezuela and lost everything there after several riots and chaos. I had worked with other shows such as Harper Amusement, Johnnies United Shows, and a couple of independents before we joined up with Conklin Shows. I had grown up in a show family but decided to become a mark when I became an adult. I currently teach Business courses in two different universities. I often use my experiences from my show days to teach economic theory, business strategies, etc...

West - Game Operator
First, I would like to thank Mr Thurston for giving me this opportunity to to share some the very fond memories that I have of the years that I spent working on a Conklin midway. I started working for Mr. Bob Cassata, (the owner of Bob's Space Racers) in 1973. I spent several years working for the Cassata family. They were some the best, as well as some of the hardest times of my life. I can remember how Bob and I would have a blow out one night.(Wayne is fired) And then how I would get woken up with a pail of ice water the next morning. Bob would be standing there (with that little smile on his face) yelling at me, get your ass back to work and get your f****ing joint open. Your going to miss lot call. He would throw my key ring back at me(oh how proud I was to carry even that small partial key ring) and off to work I would go. Just another day on the lot. I'm not sure that Bob knows how big of an impact that he had on my young l ife. Mr. Bob Cassata (and several other lot bosses) taught me life lessons that I still very much use in my day to day life today. I will always be grateful to you Bob. You took the time to teach a lost young man, and to help him find his way in life. Thanks for not giving up on me Bob, I will never forget it. I remember with great fondness, Bob's wife Joyce and both of their terrific daughters, the youngest Karen,(The little wild one. Hehehe) and of course their first born Glenda. Glenda and her now husband, Fred (or as we all knew him, Punky) were already very much involved in the business by the time I first met them. I miss them all very much. I like to think of my early year's with the show, as the good old day's. The day's before there were so many rules and regulations from outside sources that had to be considered. When I started on the lot, the general rule of thought was let's work hard and make a lot of money, so that we could play just as hard when we were off du ty. And play hard we did. Hehehe. They were great times. We worked and played pretty well around the clock. Yet, no one seemed to really run out of gas. Oh, there were some pretty hard lot calls to get open for some mornings. But, the show had to go on. And that's the way everyone seemed to look at things. We did what we had to do, to make sure the that all the joint's and rides were open. Everyday, no matter what. If someone needed help, then help he or she got help. Usually, by mid afternoon everyone was back on their game. We were all ready to get a tip built in front of the joint. It would be dark soon. It was time to have some fun with the marks while they threw their money at us. It was great. I loved being a mike man, and I think I was a pretty good one. Back in my day. (Hey my friend Richie from the Bronx N.Y. do you remember me?) It was a time when we were continually trying new things out on the midway. I remember the first night that I decided to turn off the brit e white fluorescent lights in my joint.(At that time I was still running Bob's old, slow, horse race game) I tried using the black-lights only. I still remember Bob running over and frantically wanting to know what went wrong with the lights. He was so mad at me.(again hehe) But you know what? It was the still the the early 70's and black-lights were in. By the next night several of the joints on the midway were running black-lights only. (Even Bob in his brand new water game) It was a gimmick that had a short life span, but it still made us a few bucks for a little while. That was the great thing about the lot. It was something new every day. It's funny. When one starts to remember all the great times I had on the lot I feel like I could go on and on. I'll give you all a break though, and I wont. I finished up my last couple of years on the midway working for Don & Mary Larson who ran several six arrows & pea games for Conklin. I also consider Don as a mentor in my life. As I said, there were several lot bosses that had a great influence in my life, and Don is another man that I have a great respect for. Don taught me many other life lessons. I remember that both Don and I shared a passion for gambling at the time.(Don is a great pro gambler) It used to get both of us in some trouble with Jimmy Conklin from time to time. LOL. I remember one year in Edmonton. Jimmy had banned us from leaving the lot to gamble, and of course we weren't allowed to gamble on the midway. We had to buy two way radios and set up the lawn chairs behind the scenery on the roof of a joint that was facing the horse racing track. Don would sit up there on the roof of that joint with his binoculars and radio me his bets over to the track. I would bet the same horses as Don, and we would both be making money. Hehehehe. That was until Jimmy caught us and fined both of us.(Don's was a lot more than mine) Hehehe. Good Times. I will always hold Don & Mary and their two daughters near and dear to my heart. It would be impossible to mention all the wonderful people that I can remember from the numerous shows that I worked for Conklin midways. I would just like to say that I miss you all. If anyone out there remembers me and would like to get in touch. My e-mail address is zhawk101@shaw.ca. I would love to hear from any of the old gang. In closing, I would just like to say to all of the Alumni members of the Conklin family. WALK IN...WALK IN TO WIN..... I love and miss you all. Wayne Zloty
